Chagrin River / Flooding Info

The beautiful Chagrin River winds through a good portion of the City of Willoughby Hills and thus we are prone to localized flooding events.  While flooding can be predicted to some extent, there are many variables some of which include rainfall, ground saturation & runoff, snow, and ice.  While significant rain events can lead to nuisance flooding, ice jams and spring thaws can lead to sudden and potentially dangerous flash flood events.

WHFD works closely with the National Weather Service as well as with neighboring fire departments in preparation to notify and assist residents during flood events.  And while we do our best to stay on top of the weather and its affect on the river, it is important for residents who live within the flood planes to be educated, stay alert, and be prepared to take action.

The primary means of notification for potential or active flood events will be through the county's Reverse 9-1-1 system, and when possible, through social media.  True landlines are automatically registered with the Reverse 9-1-1 system, however, cell phones and email must be subscribed by the resident.
