From the Mayor's Office: Update on Maplegrove Road repair -
(as of 8/25/10)

From the Office of Mayor Weger

Dated: August 24, 2010

Dear Residents:

I have received updated information from the City Engineer that I wanted to pass along to you.

The completion “end date” has been moved to September 17, 2010.  While I know this may upset many of you, I want to assure you that this extension has been necessitated by the following items:

1)       Once initial digging commenced, additional reinforcement at the toe of the slope required re-engineering of the bottom of the slope.  In the long run, this is crucial in maintaining the longevity of the repair.

2)       Once the street was taken out, unstable subgrade soil was found beneath the street.  This was dug out and replaced.

3)       An independent analysis of the soil to ensure specifications were met was done prior to continuing the project.  During this time, no workers were on site and many concerned residents called City Hall during this time; however, the analysis was completed and workers then returned to the site.

4)       Concrete was poured, but a section needs to be re-poured due to cracks appearing due to hot weather-related conditions.

5)       The removal and replacement of 200’ of pavement from Parsons east was added to the initial project.  Assessment of this area (pot holes and cracks that would have been travel hazards once the slope was repaired) showed that it was prudent to repair this now, rather than wait until later and face the possibility of another road closure.

The following schedule has been given to me to outline the plans which will bring us to the end date of September 17th:

Wednesday 8/25/10       Begin removal of 200’ of roadway (Parsons west)

Tuesday 8/31/10            Pour one lane of concrete pavement.

Friday 9/3/10                 Pour remaining lane of concrete pavement.

Thursday 9/9/10             Grading and restoration of roadway shoulder

Friday 9/17/10               Open road to traffic

I am requesting your patience as there will be periods of no activity as we wait for the concrete to cure and check the beam breaks to ensure the concrete meets proper compressive strength.

Thank you for your assistance as we work through this construction project.  Feel free to call my office at 440-946-6614 if you have any questions or concerns.

Maplegrove Road Slope Failure - Update (as of 6/8/10)

This is an improvement to repair a slope failure on the north side of Maplegrove Road just east of Parsons Drive.  The City was successful in securing 100% financing of this project from outside sources.  This project is being funded by the Lake County Stormwater Management Department and the Ohio Public Works Commission.

A construction contract was awarded by the City to Mr. Excavator, Inc. of Kirtland, OH.  The project will necessitate a road closure that began June 7, 2010 and will continue through the end of July.   Maplegrove Road will be open to local traffic only.  Detour signs are posted to route traffic.

Update (as of 3/22/10)

Bids were received March 5, 2010 for improvements to repair a slope failure on the north side of Maplegrove Road just east of Parsons Drive.  The City was successful in securing 100% financing of this project from outside sources.  This project is being funded by the Lake County Stormwater Management Department and the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Bids are being tabulated and reviewed with a construction contract award expected in April.  Please be advised that this project will necessitate a road closure for approximately 60 days and will be open to local traffic only.  Detour signs will be posted to route traffic and further details will be forthcoming on this website.

SOM Center Road Improvements - Update (as of 6/8/10)

This is a project designed to widen SOM Center Road; install a new traffic signal at the entrance drives to the Classic Car Dealerships and the Cleveland Clinic complex; and, to link the signals via radio with the traffic signals in Willoughby.  A construction contract was awarded to Perram Electric, Inc. by the Ohio Department of Transportation.    We will begin to see some construction activity in the area, but the majority of the work will take place from August through the November of this year to coordinate with the fabrication and delivery of the traffic control equipment.   ODOT is administering this federally-funded project.

Update (as of 3/22/10)

Bids were received by the Ohio Department of Transportation on March 11, 2010.  Bids are being reviewed by ODOT and construction is expected to begin this Summer and will take about 4 months to complete.  The City will announce more detail when notified as ODOT is administering this federally-funded project.

Roadway Improvements - Update (as of 12/30/09)

The City has completed the engineering design of a much-needed improvement on SOM Center Road at the Interstate 90 Interchange and is pleased to announce it has successfully secured funding in the amount of $951,500 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  The project will include these major elements of work:

1.     The widening of the road to permit a dedicated northbound lane from the Classic Car Dealership entrance drive to the eastbound on-ramp to I-90.  This section of road will be completely resurfaced; the median will be completely reconstructed and will be reduced in length with landscape features.

2.     A new modern traffic signal with mast arms and controller will be installed at the intersection of the entrance drives to the Classic Car Dealerships and the Cleveland Clinic Complex.

3.     With the cooperation and assistance from the City of Willoughby, the traffic signals will be interconnected via radio telemetry to improve traffic flow along SOM Center Road north to State Route 84.

The project will be administered by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) with construction scheduled to begin sometime in the Spring of 2010.
