Fire Department

Service Area (Response District)

While the City of Willoughby Hills is the primary response district of the Willoughby Hills Fire Department, we also provide contracted Fire & EMS services to the Village of Waite Hill and have done so since 1976.  Willoughby Hills is bordered by nine communities (Euclid, Gates Mills, Highland Heights, Kirtland, Mayfield Village, Richmond Heights, Waite Hill, Wickliffe, and Willoughby) and provides mutual aid and automatic mutual aid to these communities as well as many others in Lake, Cuyahoga, and Geauga Counties.  The Willoughby Hills Fire Department also participates in a state-wide mutual aid agreement formerly referred to as the Intrastate Mutual Aid Compact (IMAC) organized through the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA).

While many fire departments’ response districts are limited to certain types of hazards and occupancies, the district covered by the Willoughby Hills Fire Department provides an array of potential incidents.  In addition to typical single-family and commercial occupancies, our district consists of the following notable components and their potential implications:

  • 8 high-rise apartment buildings (personnel-intensive fire operations)
  • Significant portions of Interstates 90 and 271 (traffic crashes, hazardous cargo routes)
  • North Chagrin Reservation (Cleveland Metroparks) (fire, search & rescue, technical rescue)
  • Chagrin River and its watersheds (technical rescue, flooding)
  • Approach path to Cuyahoga County Airport (aircraft fire & rescue)
